Thom Beach is located in Thom Village (Bai Thom Village) which is approximately 35kms from Duong Dong Town and in the vicinity of the most lush, dense, and diverse region of the Phu Quoc National Forest. The road from Duong Dong Town to the village is well paved and it is probably the most enjoyable motorbike road trip in all of Phu Quoc Island.  The beach is only 1.5kms in length and not as picturesque as the other beaches found here on Phu Quoc but Thom Beach does have its own charm.

THOM VILLAGE

Bai Thom village was once a restricted military zone due to its proximity to Cambodia as both of these countries were essentially at war with each other, but those days are long gone.  Thom Village is now a peaceful place and its inhabitants are mainly fishermen and their families.  The village is slowly preparing itself for mass tourism as the entire village will be redeveloped by 2020 into a eco-tourism hub.

THE BEACH

We here at PhuQuocIslandGuide.com classify Thom Beach as a semi wild beach as the beach here is still primitive and the landscape seems to have remained relatively untouched.   From the beach you can see Cambodia’s Rabbit Island, Kampot Province, and Kep. The vegetation around the beach consists of mainly poplar trees with a few scattered coconut palm trees.  The beach, as well as the shoreline, is riddled with various types of different rocks.  Some of the rocks appear to be of the volcanic type that have small sea snails living on top of them. The sand here at Thom Beach is granular in nature and the color of the sand resembles salt and pepper.  Certain sections of the beach are nicer than others.

THE OCEAN

The sea at Thom Beach is very shallow and tidal in nature. At low tide, the water recedes leaving behind it a boundless sandy beach with a lot of tidal animals (e.g. crabs, crustaceans, etc). At low tide it is possible to walk across to nearby Mot Island which is only meters away from the coast.  When the tides rise very little of the beach remains.  The slope into the ocean is low making it easy to enter and exit it however the ocean floor consists of rocks and coral debris so you need to be careful where you plant your feet. The water clarity varies depending on the season and the sea here can be quite quite rough at times, especially during the wet season.

WILDLIFE

While swimming at Thom Beach you have to be aware of sea urchins (year round) and jellyfish (seasonal).  There is also coral present at shallow depths.  If you venture off to the forest nearby you may see silver langurs, macaques, wild boars, flying squirrels and deer.

MOT ISLAND (HON MOT)

Close to shore resides a small island known as Mot Island (Hon Mot).  Mot Island is connected to Thom Beach at low tide and can be reached by foot by walking across a narrow bridge made out of rock.  During high tide, you can only access the island by boat or for the adventurous, you can just swim there.  Some tour operators stop off at Mot Island as part of their “North Island” adventure tour where tourists can explore the small island and take pictures of the Cambodian coast.  There isn’t much to do on the island itself apart from exploring the flora and fauna, especially the tidal creatures such as crabs.

WHAT TO SEE

  • Watch the sunset and sunrise: Watching the sunrise at Thom Beach is quite magical as the sun rises from behind Cambodia.  Thom Beach is also a great place to watch the sunset, as the entire sky light up providing you with spectacular light show.
  • Visit Phu Quoc Crocodile Farm: The Phú Hải crocodile farm is located in Đá Chồng in Bãi Thơm and it provides you with an overview of how crocodiles are farmed. Here you will find approximately 2,500 crocodiles which are raised and sold for their meat and skin.You can tour the hatchery, the processing plant, and see the adult crocodiles in their pens.   Vietnam has two species of crocodiles – the salt-water crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the fresh-water Siamese crocodile (C siamensis) – both of which have been hunted for illegal export to China, Thailand and other countries.  Farming is a sustainable way to meet overseas demands and to prevent poaching of wild animals.
  • Visit the cashew nut plantation: North of Thom Beach you will find a lot of cashew nut plantations which you can visit.

WHAT TO DO

There are a few activities that you can do at Thom Beach.  You can rent a boat and cruise along the shoreline, fish off the boat, and also visit Mot Island.  If you catch a fish (or squid) you can have one of the restaurants cook them for you for a small fee. You can also snorkel in the waters off Thom Beach as there are a few hard corals in the area.  If you do not have your own snorkel and mask with you, you can rent one for the day for 50,000VND at Cay Vong Nem Resort.  If you are seafood lover, you can forage off the land and sea and collect sea urchins, sea snails, small crabs, conch, and some clams and have yourself a nice shore lunch.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

There are a few beach front restaurants that serve a variety of seafood dishes and traditional Vietnamese dishes.  The portions are quite large and the price varies.  In Thom Village there are also numerous small local eateries serving pho bo, com, etc.

HOW TO GET HERE

Getting to Thom Beach is quite easy as the roads are all paved.  From Duong Dong Town cross over the main bridge and head to “Bai Thom”. You will pass by a few pepper plantations as well as the Phu Quoc dog racing track, both of which can be a great place for a break.  It will take you about 40-50minutes to get to Thom Beach from Doung Dong town providing that you do not stop along the way, but given the amazing scenery in the north, expect to stop numerous times.  The scenery around Thom Village is incredible and the ride up is one of the most picturesque on the island.  Just before arriving at Thom Village you will pass by Mt. Chua, which is the islands highest mountain at 603m.

NEED TO KNOW

As of 2014 there is only one small pharmacy in Thom Village and there are no hospitals nor any ATM/Banks in town so please bring some money with you.  Mosquitoes can be a problem here during the wet season so please pack insect repellant.  If you plan on snorkeling, we advise that you wear water booties or snorkel fins as the sea bed has a lot of sea urchins.

The Best Undeveloped Beaches on Phu Quoc

The biggest undeveloped beach on Phu Quoc is Bai Thom. It is not suitable for swimming, but is a great place to take photos of the fishermen’s lives. It is also easily accessible by car through the East Coast Road, which runs south to Ham Ninh. THOM BEACH PHU QUOC

Ong Lang beach is surrounded by a landfill

In 2008, ABC News dubbed Phu Quoc Island as the cleanest and most beautiful island in the world. But things have changed since then. Today, Phu Quoc is notorious for its over-pollution and landfills. As a result, the island’s beaches are now littered with garbage. The island is home to the world’s first landfill where tourism is being run. In addition, there are many issues with the tourism infrastructure and the waste management.

There are several options for beach activities in Thom Beach. The main beach is Ong Lang, which is located on the west side of the island. It is lined with rocks and has a narrow sandy strip, which is less crowded than other beaches in the area. It is a great place for snorkeling and swimming, but the infrastructure of the beach is very limited.

Dragon Beach is the most beautiful untouched beach left in Phu Quoc

Located about 1 km north of the starfish beach is the beautiful Dragon Beach. The sand is thin and the water is shallow, making it ideal for swimming and camping. It also has the appearance of many starfish. Unlike the more popular Rach Vem beach, Ham Rong is a true starfish kingdom, if not prettier. There are also many rock formations and caves here.

The secluded Dragon Beach is a popular destination for couples. The beach is 500 meters long and has an arch-shaped shape. The sand is coarse and golden, and corals can be found under the water. This island has a quaint little village where you can buy beach gear and snacks. Dragon Beach is a hidden gem! It’s definitely worth visiting.

Suoi Tranh and Suoi Da Ban are the best waterfalls in Phu Quoc

Locals and tourists alike flock to this area to see the beautiful waterfalls and explore the trails leading to them. There are also natural pools and trails to explore. Locals enjoy hiking and cycling along the waterfall trails to enjoy the natural scenery. These are just a few reasons why you should visit Thom Beach Phu Quoc.

The Suoi Tranh Waterfall is located in the lush forests in the nearby Suoi Tranh. The waterfall is only about 300 meters from its source. It is not large, but has low rapids. It flows along rocks and makes soft white waterfalls. You should plan a visit during peak season. There is also a nearby camping site.

THOM BEACH PHU QUAC is a small, quaint fishing village located just a short walk from the town of Ganh Dau. This quiet, crescent-shaped beach is surrounded by a forest of tropical palm trees and boasts clean, crystal water. While the town itself is rather unassuming, you can expect to find many friendly locals, great seafood, and an interesting market. The town is also dotted with small resorts, many of which are prone to flooding due to their proximity to the waves.

The only hotel located on the southern part of the bay is the Premier Residences. There are also a couple of other high-end resorts under construction. One of these is the Marriott Emerald Bay, which is a luxury concept resort built around a fictional university. The rest of the beach is a construction site with more boutique hotels. The area is very tranquil and you will not have to worry about disturbing the local wildlife as you hike and fish.

Ong Lang beach is praised as a tourism village

Though less famous than Starfish Beach and Khem Beach, Ong Lang is one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches in Phu Quoc. Known for its calm and waveless waters, it is also a perfect location for snorkeling and diving. The calm waters of this beach are perfect for swimming and exploring the colorful corals and shells. Locals here are happy to assist you with the activity and provide information.

A visit to Ong Lang beach will let you experience the primitive beauty of the island and its serene landscape. The beach is located about 6 kilometers south of the small town of Duong Dong. The sand is a mix of sand and rocks, which gives it a twinkling appearance when the sun shines. This beautiful beach is an excellent spot for watching the sunset.

Located on the western coast of Phu Quoc, Ong Lang beach is less crowded than other beaches in the area. With its turquoise water and yellow sand, it’s perfect for a family beach day. The beach is also ideal for outdoor team building activities. In addition, it’s surrounded by a shrine. Visitors are welcome to visit the shrine and take a few moments to meditate and reflect.

Ong Lang beach is a popular swimming and diving spot. There is a small shrine and a nearby resort. Visitors can stroll the long beach, or rent beach equipment at one of the local beach shops. You can also enjoy a beach picnic here. For a memorable experience, bring a picnic lunch. There are also basic BBQ facilities nearby, which make Forng Lang a perfect spot for an unforgettable day.

Phu Quoc National Park is rich with life, both animal and plant life. The boundaries of the park stretches from Cua Can Village in the west up to Ganh Dau Village in the north west

TOPOGRAPHY & HYDROLOGY

The park is mainly covered with three mountain systems found on the island: the Ham Ninh, Ham Rong, and Ganh Dau mountain range. The two main river systems that cut across the park are the Cua Can River and the Duong Dong River. The smaller Rach Tram River in the north also cuts through the park. All three of these rivers provide access points, via boat or kayak, inside Phu Quoc National Park.

The park also includes 60kms of coastline within the park boundaries and includes the following beaches: Cua Can Beach, Vung Bau Beach, Thom Beach, Rach Vem Beach, Rach Tram Beach, Ham Ninh Beach and Dai Beach. All of these beaches have been slated to be developed further for tourism.

BIODIVERSITY

Phu Quoc National Park is rich with life, both animal (fauna) and plant (flora) life. Some of the plants found in the park are also used for medicinal purposes.

Animals that can be found in the park include: silvered langur, hornbill, sea eagle, woodpeckers, brown hawk owl, slow loris, civet cat, wild pig, crab-eating macaque, python, stump-tailed macaque, small-clawed otter, giant flying fox bat, fruit bats, and more.

Where to spot wildlife

As most National Park trails are not developed or off limits, most of the wildlife you will see will be next to a dirt road that looks like:

1) ON K7 ROAD BETWEEN RACH TRAM BEACH & THOM VILLAGE

K7 Road is the road that takes you to Rach Tram Village and cuts through a pristine section of the National Park. Wildlife can be spotted next to the road that cuts through Ham Rong Mountain.

Some of the animals you may spot here are:

  • Mammals: Eurasian wild pig (Heo rung), Sambar (Nai), Flying Fox Bat (just before sunset), Long tailed macaque (Khi
    duoi dai), Otter (Close to Rach Tram River), Yellow-Throated Marten (Chồn), Phu Quoc Red squirrel (Soc do Phuquoc), Northern Treeshrew (Doi), and others.
  • Birds: Goose, Swallow, Teal, Great hornbill, Egret, Pelican, Magpie-robin, etc
  • Reptiles: Snake, Python, Crocodile (not likely but have there is one in captivity at Rach Tram Village), Turtle (Near Rach Tram River), Gekko gekko, etc.
  • Amphibians: Toad (Coc), Frog (Ech), Tree-frog (Nhai), etc

Note: If you go to Rach Tram Village, the Rach Tram River is teeming with mangrove specific wildlife such as otters, river turtles, etc. The Rach Tram river also cuts deep into the Phu Quoc National Park. For 200,000VND to 300,000VND a local fisherman will take you down the river.

2) Ham Ninh Mountain Range

At a side road near Ham Ninh Village and at the foot of the Ham Ninh Mountain Range lies a great spot to observe wildlife. Wildlife here is harder to spot however if you come here before sunrise you may see macaques and the silver langur. The road here is not named and the terrain is a quite rough and can be difficult to navigate during the wet season.

Some of the animals you may spot here include:

  • Mammals: Slow loris (Cu li lon) – can be viewed in the evenings, Pygmy loris (Cu li nho), Long tailed macaque (Khi duoi dai), Indochinese silvered langur (Vo ọc bac), Otter, Phu Quoc Red squirrel (Soc do Phu quoc), Eurasian wild pig (Heorung), Yellow-Throat ed Marten (Zhồn), Sambar (Nai), Northern Treeshrew (Doi), etc.
  • Birds: Brown Hawk Owl (Cú), Spotted-necked Dove (cu), Flowerpecker (Sau), Forest Wagtail (Chia voi), Woodpecker (Go kien), Lesser Coucal (Bim bip), Red Jungle-Fowl (ga rung), etc.
  • Reptiles: Varan (ky da), Snake (ran), Tortoise (Rua), Gekko (Tac ke), etc.
  • Amphibians: Toad (Coc), Frog (Ech), Tree-frog (Nhai), etc.

3) Near the forest trail – Suoi Cai Road

The red dirt road from Ganh Dau to Thom Village known as Suoi Cai Road is a great place to spot the silver langur.

 

4) Quoc Phong Road

Quong Phong Road is a hotspot for wildlife spotting and you have the best chance of larger mammals here than anywhere else. The road is rough however the access point is easier to find as it is off Nguyen Trung Truc Road, the road that takes you to Thom Village from Duong Dong Town.

Some of the animals you may spot here are:

  • Mammals: Eurasian wild pig (Heo rung), Sambar (Nai), Flying Fox Bat (just before sunset), Long tailed macaque (Khi
    duoi dai), Otter (Close to Rach Tram River), Yellow-Throated Marten (Chồn), Phu Quoc Red squirrel (Soc do Phuquoc), Northern Treeshrew (Doi), and others.
  • Birds: Goose, Swallow, Teal, Great hornbill, Egret, Pelican, Magpie-robin, etc
  • Reptiles: Snake, Python, Crocodile (not likely but have there is one in captivity at Rach Tram Village), Turtle (Near Rach Tram River), Gekko gekko, etc.
  • Amphibians: Toad (Coc), Frog (Ech), Tree-frog (Nhai), etc

Finally, 7,200 hectares of the park consists of the coastal area where you will find 9 species of seagrass, a key food source for the rare and elusive sea dugong.

HOW TO GET HERE

It is pretty easy to get to Phu Quoc National Park since 70% of the island is considered a “National Park”, you just have to head north or east. The total road system that cuts through the park is about 90kms in length with a total of 12 bridges. The most scenic areas are by Thom Village and Ham Ninh Village.

WHAT TO SEE

  • View wildlife – The best time to view the larger animals is before sunrise (monkeys), sunset (flying fox bat), and at night (nocturnal cats and owls). We have seen silver langurs near the forest walk at 10am, macaques near Ham Ninh at 6am, and a hornbill near Thom Village at 11am. The chance of you seeing these animals are quite rare, but not impossible. We advise that you bring your binoculars if you want to see the numerous bird species found on the island.
  • Observe the flora – The forests at the park are inundated with a variety of flora including flowers such as wild orchids, ferns, medicinal plants such as wild ginseng, colorful mushrooms some of which are edible (e.g. the tram mushroom), mosses, lichens, and a variety of trees. Remember to take only pictures and only leave behind footprints.
  • See Mount Chua – A 20 minute drive from Duong Dong Town lays Mount Chua. At 603 meters in height, Mount Chua is the National Parks and Phu Quoc’s highest mountain and is connected to the Ham Ninh chain of mountains that stretch for 30kms along north eastern Phu Quoc. Currently you can only see Mount Chua as this mountain is not accessible by the general public however there are plans on transforming Mount Chua into a tourist spot by building a trail to the top and a viewing platform complete with a snack bar and restaurant. It is still possible to trek to the top of Mount Chua however you will need to hire a private tour guide. Contact one of the tour agencies on the island and they will find someone who will take you up the mountain. The panoramic views at the top are breathtaking, so we’ve heard.

WHAT TO DO

  • Motorbike from Duong Dong Town to Thom Village – You can rent a motorbike from Duong Dong Town and explore the northerly parts of the island on your own. The best area to see the mountainous peaks and dense vegetation can be found on the road toward Thom Village (Bai Thom). To get there from Duong Dong Town, go down Hung Voung Road and cross the bridge, and then head north towards Thom Village.
  • Hiking and trekking – There are some unmarked trails just south of Thom Village that you can explore. Just park your motorbike or bicycle at the side of the road and explore the trail.
  • Boat – You can hire a boat and enter the park through the three river systems listed above. Organized tours will take you into the park via the Cua Can River.
  • Forest walk – 5kms east of Ganh Dau Village there is a nice trail that takes you inside a heavily forested area. You can navigate the trail by either on foot, motorbike, or mountain bike. The trail here is mostly flat however it can get quite muddy after it rains. The trail’s entrance is marked by a large sign and there is a small unguarded parking area if you wish to park your motorbike. The road to get here from Ganh Dau Village is currently an unpaved red dirt road but it is easy to find. In Ganh Dau Village, look for the Petrolimex gas station or ask someone where the petrol station is as the gas station is located on the road that will take you to the trail.

Quá trình hình thành ngọc trai tự nhiên: Khi cát không may rơi vào trong thân, di vật này gây nhói, nhưng không đủ khả năng để đẩy dị vật ra ngoài, do đó con trai phải tiết ra một chất bọc lấy hạt cát ấy. Ở trong nội tạng con vật, dị vật ấy được bồi đắp dày dần theo năm tháng và to lên, gọi là ngọc trai. Màu sắc của ngọc trai thường giống như màu vỏ gần lớp ngoài cùng vỏ cứng của con trai vì thế nếu có vỏ đen thì sẽ cho viên ngọc trai đen, nếu là điệp hồng thì sẽ cho những viên ngọc màu hồng và đa số là ngọc màu xà cừ trắng ánh sắc cầu vồng.

 

Loại nhuyễn thể trai, sò có một phản xạ tự nhiên khi có vết thương trong quá trình sinh sống là bao bọc xà cừ quanh vết thương, đặc biệt là khi bị các dị vật như hạt cát, mẩu đá lọt vào cơ thể chúng.

 

Thành phần chủ yếu của ngọc trai là lớp xà cừ Carbonate Calcium chiếm hơn 90% phần còn lại là nước và các hợp chất hữu cơ tạo ra sự sống cho viên gnọc. Cấu trúc lớp xà cừ được tạo bởi hàng nghìn những lớp tinh thể Carbonate Calcium mỏng. Cấu trúc này có ảnh hưởng tới màu sắc, độ ánh, tính bền vững và đàn hồi của ngọc trai.

Snorkeling is really easy, and the great thing is that there is no age limit, you do not have to be very fit or sporty, even non-swimmers can do it by wearing a life-vest; just simply float and watch the fish and coral.You don’t have to dive into deep waters miles from shore to experience Phu Quoc’s underwater life as there are many snorkeling spots near shore for you to discover.  However, if you want to experience snorkeling in the An Thoi Islands, then it is best that you join a tour.

WHERE CAN YOU SNORKEL IN PHU QUOC ISLAND?

The real question should be, where can’t you snorkel on Phu Quoc Island. The island has plenty of places for you to get your feet wet. At North Long Beach, Starfish (Sao) Beach, and Ganh Dau Beach you can find a good amount of underwater life close to shore. If you want some privacy while you snorkel, then at Thom Village, at the north east part of the island, there is a great patch of coral just 30m from shore with little to no traffic.  Here are some of the snorkeling spots on Phu Quoc that we have discovered:

Phu Quoc Snorkeling and Fishing tour to the South

If you did not pack your snorkel mask and fin you can purchase basic gear from the numerous shops around Duong Dong Town and Long Beach Village.  If you are looking for a higher quality mask and snorkel, they can be purchased at the various dive shops found along the main tourist strip.

  • Cost for a basic plastic snorkel set: 100,000VND to 200,000VND
  • Cost for an advanced snorkeling set (tempered glass): 600,000VND and up.

Below you will find a list of various snorkeling spots for you to explore and discover Phu Quoc’s underwater life.

SNORKELING TOURS

Most tour operators on the island offer 2 types of snorkeling tours: 1) Snorkeling & fishing in the south tour and 2) Snorkel & fishing in the north tour.

1) Snorkeling & fishing in the south tour – Between $14USD to $20USD

TYPICAL ITINERARY:

  • Pickup at 8:30am by van from your hotel/resort.  Depending on how large the group is, you  may be transferred to a larger bus.
  • On the way to An Thoi and before reaching the port, your tour operator may take you to a pearl farm/store for 30minutes.  Please note that these tour operators make a commission if you buy something.
  • At around 10-10:30am, you will leave the pearl farm/store and drive down to An Thoi Port.
  • You will board the boat at around 11am or so.
  • Once you have disembarked, the first stop in the An Thoi archipelago is of a  floating fish market to buy sea urchins.
  • Then you will go fishing.
  • The you will snorkel at the various spots in the An Thoi archipelago.
  • Lunch and fruit is served at around 1pm.  Cooked sea urchins are extra.
  • Then you go  to coconut island for swimming and sight seeing before heading back  to An Thoi Port.
  • Once you reach An Thoi Port, you are drive to Starfish beach.  You will stay at Starfish beach for 1 hour.
  • Finally you head back to your resort at around 3:30pm

Duration of the tour: 8:30am to 4:30pm
Cost: Varies depending on the tour operator; from $14USD to $20USD per person
Lunch: Tuna + Tofu + Egg + Vegetables + Noodle with Seafood + Potato Soup + Rice.  Sea urchin, lobster and other “premium” seafood will be extra.

MORE DETAILS:

  • The boat will leave from An Thoi Port and it has a seating area on the lower and upper deck.  If you want to tan, stay on the upper deck.  The lower deck is equipped with long benches and tables for those who love to read, listen to music or enjoy some snacks.
  • After an hour at sea, the boat will stop for you to fish. Tourists will receive some plastic coil fish reels and squid as bait.  Most of the fish you catch will be quite small.
  • After fishing, you will travel to Hon Dam Trong Islet, an island close to An Thoi Town, and snorkel in the shallow sea there.  The depth here is about 4m to 5m and there are some alive coral and colorful fish here, however most of the coral is dead (bleached).  You have to swim from your boat to the good snorkeling spots.  Be aware that there is scattered garbage (mainly plastics) in the water.
  •  You will then go to two more snorkeling spots before having lunch.
  • The lunch varies but usually includes a soup, rice, noodles, fried egg, and some vegetables.  Water is free but soft drinks and beer are extra (approximately 20,000VND to 30,000VND).  If you want to try the urchin, the urchins will cost you anywhere between 20,000VND to 50,000VND per piece depending on which tour you go on.  The urchins are BBQ’ed with oil, onion, and peanuts (Cau gai nuong mo hanh ).
  • After lunch, you will go to Hon Dua Islet (Coconut Island) for sight seeing and swimming.  If you want to step foot off the boat and onto the island there is a taxi boat that will take you at a cost of 10,000VND.
  • Hon Dua Islet is the last island in the An Thoi archipelago that you visit.  The next stop is Bai Sao Beach for an hour for swimming and/or rental of jetskis.  You can also purchase snacks here but they are extra.
  • After Sao Beach, you return back to  your hotel in a mini van.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW AND THE TOUR AGENCIES WILL NOT TELL YOU:

  • There is a good chance that you will be taken to a pearl farm/store, even though there is no mention of it on any website (except us) or brochure.  The intent is that you buy something so that the tour agencies get a commission.
  • It will take you about 2 hours to get to An Thoi port from Duong Dong Town/North Long Beach.
  • If you are prone to sea sickness, please bring the appropriate medication with you.
  • In the sea surrounding the An Thoi archipelago you will see a lot of plastic garbage floating around.  The snorkeling spots will also have scattered garbage floating around.
  • The fishing here is not the greatest and the tour agencies do not give you Deep Sea Fishing gear.  They give you plastic reels with some line.  Bring your own gear with you if you have it.  If you do not have it and want to purchase your own rod and reel, you can pick one up at Duong Dong Town on 30 dang 4 street near the dental clinic as there is a fishing store there.
  • If you are a seasoned snorkeler, don’t expect to see vibrant coral here. Global warming, dynamite fishing, and algal blooms have all taken their toll on the reef system here.
  • After snorkeling, you drive to Bai Sao Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Vietnam.  Although you may be tired from the snorkeling and driving, this beach will take your breath away.  If you still have some energy left, you can rent a jetski for 20 minutes right from the beach.

What are the alternative ways to experience snorkeling at the An Thoi archipelago?

There are 2 alternatives to have a better experience at the An Thoi archipelago: 1) Join a scuba dive expedition and go snorkeling or 2) Do it yourself

1) Snorkeling with a diver operator

  • Snorkel spots vary and it depends on where they are going diving.
  • Spots include: Hon Dan Ngang, Hon Doi, Ho Kim Guy, Da Chong, Bai Boi, Ngoc Trai, Ky Lan, and others.

Most of us at PhuQuocIslandGuide.com did not like the South Island Snorkeling & Fishing Tour.  A lot of time was wasted on things other than snorkeling.  We did, however, come back and created our own tour and you can too.  This is how you can do it, and it really helps if you have your own snorkeling gear and can speak Vietnamese  but it is not necessary as long as you have a smartphone and Google translate with you.  You can buy basic snorkeling gear at Long Beach Village for 120,000VND.

2) DO IT YOURSELF – HOW TO CHARTER YOUR OWN BOAT TO SNORKEL THE AN THOI ISLANDS:

  • Make your way to An Thoi port independently, either by a motorbike or by taxi.  It will take you about 40minute to get you to An Thoi Port from Duong Dong Town.  The roads are all well paved and the directions are really easy – just go south towards the new airport, make a left on the road that takes you to the airport then pass the airport until you reach a roundabout, and then make a right.  Then follow that road all the way to An Thoi Town proper.  Once you are in An Thoi, and you know you are there because you will see the ocean in front of you, ,make a right on Nguyen Troung Road (you cannot go straight as the road will take you to a restricted naval base) and then follow the road until you reach An Thoi Port.  You know when you have reached the port when you see a lot of street side fish vendors and a large new white building.  To get pass the port gate, you need o  pay 5,000VND. Park your motorbike (10,000VND per day) and grab your gear.
  • Once at the port, go to the pier and ask the people standing around the boats that you want to rent a boat to go snorkeling.  There are many fisherman that will take you and the cost is about 300,000VND to 500,000VND depending on where you want to go and for how long.  All the prices are of course negotiable.  If you want seafood cooked for you, then that will be extra.
  • The boats are very slow, so in order to maximize your snorkeling experience tell the boat owner that you want to go to Hon Dua, Hon Thom, Hon Roi,  Hon Dam Ngoi, and Hon Dam Trong islands in that order.  These islands are not that far from An Thoi Port.  If the weather/current is not favorable, the fishermen may not want to take you to some of these islets.  Snorkeling around these 5 islets will take you about 5 hours, including the the time to get there.   All the fishermen know the spot as there is a good chance that they use to fish there.  Once you are finished, the fishermen will take you back to An Thoi Port.  You will pay him once you have arrived at the port.  A tip is not required.  You can now either head back your hotel/resort or explore An Thoi Town and the beaches near by.

Duration: If you get to An Thoi Port by 9:00am you should be back to your hotel/resort by 3:00pm to 4:00pm unless you plan on staying longer in An Thoi.

You can charter a boat to the deep south of An Thoi for 3,000,000VN.

We like our “Do it yourself” tour of the An Thoi archipelago over the organized tour because we spent more time out at sea and at our own pace.  However we know that this option is not for everyone.

Rach Vem Beach (Bai Rach Vem) is a rural beach located on the northern coast of Phu Quoc and it is part of Ganh Dau commune.  The beach consists of white sand and turquoise water however this is not your typical beach as it is a “working” beach where fishermen and their families reside so do not expect to find a clean beaches or an ocean here.  Rach Vem is however beautiful in its own way.  The shore line is dotted with fishing nets and traps and has become a parking lot for the numerous fishing boats in the area. Rach Vem Beach and illage is a great place to absorb local life and it is well worth a visit, mainly for the cultural experience.

RACH VEM VILLAGE

Rach Vem Village is a small fishing village (800 meters wide and 4 km long) and this is the place to experience traditional village life as not much has changed in the past 10 years.  There are about 160 household with approximately 1,000 people living here. The village is accessible by traveling down a relatively wide red dirt side road.  The village is located between the Nhum and Coc canals and faces the sea where Cambodia can be seen in the distance.  You can expect to see very basic houses built on stilts, chickens and ducks being farmed, stray dogs and cats running around, and children following you around.  The locals do not speak English but are very friendly and helpful.  The life here is simple and there is a certain charm that exists in the village.  Unfortunately this village is destined to be redeveloped into a resort area so see it in its natural state while you can.

Rach Vem Eco Tourism Project

Rach Vem and Rach Tram are slated to be redeveloped for tourism.  The project is known as the “Rach Tram project” and will be an eco-tourism project that will incorporate the Phu Quoc National Forest and the north coastline. Tourist spots shall be located between Nhum and Coc canals, a community tourist center shall be located at the center of the beach, and the population quarter of the fishing village shall be located along Vem canal to the southwest of the beach.

It is a place for swimming

Traffic can be a challenge during the market, which is located in the downtown core.

A free shuttle bus to the Night Market is an ADA-compliant way for people with disabilities to access the downtown Boston nightlife. The shuttle starts at 5:00 p.m. and runs every fifteen minutes until 8:30 p.m. It will take you to Adele Harrison Middle School, the start of the night market. You can use the route to get around town and enjoy the night market. You’ll also be able to take advantage of the many food vendors and local products on sale.

Cityline Commuter service

The Cityline commuting service in West Hollywood has announced changes to their service hours. The Commuter routes will be running later in the evening and on Saturday nights. The Cityline Local will be experiencing minor changes and will offer a slightly later service. In addition, the Commuter service will discontinue its late night “Short Line” service. Whether you’re riding to the night market for business or pleasure, the Cityline commuting service is the way to go.

The CityLine commuting service offers free shuttle bus to night market and nearby attractions. It is also convenient for running errands in the area. Shuttle maps, available in both English and Russian, list grocery stores in the area. Schedules show thirty or forty minutes between shuttles. There is also rarely a wait time between westbound shuttles. This free service has many advantages over driving or taking the public transit.

THE BEACH

The beach is arch shaped and about 500 meters in length, fringed by palm trees, and is shielded by two mountains.  The sand is yellow in color and a bit coarse due to the vast amount of coral found in the water

THE OCEAN

The ocean is calm and teeming with life due to the presence of coral and rocks.  The water has a bluish green tint color and it is mainly free from trash.

THE WILDLIFE

Ganh Dau Beach is a great place to observe the great sea eagle flying high above you.  In the water you will find a lot of different fish species such as parrot fish, crabs, clams, etc.  Hard coral is abundant here and the coral is healthy.

WHAT TO SEE

From the shore you can see two islands, Ban Island (Hon Ban) and Mouse Island (Hon Thay Boi).  You can also see the Cambodian coast and Cambodia’s Mount Ta Lon.  Nearby you will find the Nguyen Trung Truc Temple, Ganh Dau Village, and Phu Quoc National Park all of which are worth a visit.

WHAT TO DO

Besides enjoying the view and swimming, you can rent a boat and take a tour along the coast and snorkel at two points. The hard coral here is healthy and the water is calm making it very easy to snorkel. Depending on the season and ocean currents, you can also rent a boat to visit the two island seen in the distant as mentioned above.

There are two beach front restaurants that serve a good selection of seafood and Vietnamese dishes.  Dishes start at around 100,000VND and up.

WHERE TO STAY

There are a few places to stay in in Ganh Dau Village but there are no accommodations on the official Ganh Dau Beach.  By the village there is another beach that faces Cambodia but it is not as clean nor as nice as Ganh Dau Beach as that beach has become a parking lot for fishing boats.

HOW TO GET HERE

Getting to Ganh Dau Beach from Duong Dong is easy.  Just take the Cua Can Road from Duong Dong Town all the way up until you reach Vinpearl Phu Quoc.  Stay on the paved road and keep heading north and you will eventually reach Ganh Dau Beach.  The total journey is approximately 30kms from Duong Dong.

NEED TO KNOW

At Ganh Dau you will find 2 pharmacies, a hospital, as well as 2 Petrolimex gas stations.  Currently there are not ATM’s at the moment but that is bound to change.

Vietnam Beaches – Ganh Dau Beach, Rach Vem Beach, Bai Sao Beach, and Duong Dong Beach

The beautiful beaches of Vietnam are among the country’s top tourist attractions. In addition to the beaches, Ganh Dau is famous for a shrine dedicated to Nguyen Trung Truc, a Vietnamese patriot who was executed by the French in 1868 for organizing peasants to rebel against French rule. Many Vietnamese visit Ganh Dau to pay respect to the patriot, which gives the beaches an exotic scent.

Rach Vem Beach

The Rach Vem Beach, also known as Starfish Beach, is a small beach near Gan Dau, Vietnam. You can easily reach it via a sandy road. However, Rach Vem does not have any restaurants or other amenities, so it is a day trip for many tourists. Instead of eating, many visitors prefer to go fishing or just take in the natural beauty of this place. This beach is ideal for people who love nature and fishing, but it is still popular during the daytime during peak season.

The water in Rach Vem is shallow, so it is not recommended for people who are afraid of water. You may also want to rent a motorbike. Most hotels offer motorbike rentals for between VND 150,000 to 200,000 per day. You can also rent a car for VND 700,000 per day. Nevertheless, remember to choose the best timing so that you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

Thom Beach

When you’re in Phu Quoc, don’t miss the chance to visit Thom Beach. This 2-kilometer long beach is home to a variety of marine creatures and a bank of white, yellow sand. There are also plenty of poplar trees along the beach, making this beach a perfect spot for nature lovers. It used to be that you needed to have a passport to visit the beach, but now you can visit without one.

The island of Hon Thom is located to the south of Phu Quoc. Once known for its Mong Tay trees, this area has now largely changed to coconut trees. This beautiful marine ecosystem has seventeen different types of corals and anemones. The water temperature in this area is warm and comfortable. You can even snorkel and swim in the pristine waters. This beach is also located close to the port of An Thoi, and has all the basic amenities you could want.

Bai Sao Beach

A trip to Bai Sao Beach in Phu Quoc will take you far away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. It is a gorgeous crescent-shaped beach backed by tropical trees. The name “Bai Sao” comes from the starfish that are often found on the beach. The water is clear and gentle here, and you can snorkel or sea-walk on the calm waters. The best time to go here is from June to October, when the southwest wind doesn’t blow as fiercely.

Located on the northwestern tip of Phu Quoc Island, Ganh Dau Beach offers pristine waters, flour-white sand, and coconut trees. A long red dust road leads to the beach, which can be impassable during the rainy season. However, it’s well worth the effort, and the beach is stunning! You can walk out to the beach from the nearby town of Bai Sao and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this idyllic spot.

Duong Dong Beach

If you are looking for a quiet and unspoiled beach, you should head to Ganh Dau and Duong Dong beaches. Both beaches are ideal for watching sunsets, and you can also visit the fishing boats to buy fresh seafood. The town of Duong Dong is also a great place to stay for low-cost tourists. There are a few hotels to choose from in each town.

The fishing village of Cua Can is located on the opposite side of the river from Duong Dong. During the day, visitors can visit Cua Can and enjoy fishing tours. This fishing village is perfect for families or for those looking for a little peace and quiet. While you’re at it, you can also take a short boat ride to the other side of the river. Otherwise, you can also ride your bike or hit the dirt roads.

An Thoi Islands

The northern tip of Phu Quoc Island is home to the remote Ganh Dau Beach, which is framed by palm trees and shaded by dense jungle ridges. You can reach Ganh Dau via a paved lane leading east from the fishing village. Whether you are looking for a quiet, relaxing beach or a crowded beach, you are sure to find it here.

The town is only a short bike ride away from the resorts. This gives you an opportunity to interact with the locals and observe how they live. Although the area is secluded and undeveloped, you will still find plenty of good seafood restaurants and lovely views of the bay. A bike ride or a walk along the coast is a fun way to get around the island. The town has excellent seafood restaurants and is a good place for a picnic or a quiet evening by the sea.

A Quick Guide to Explore Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam

Phu Quoc is blessed with favourable natural environment like the virgin forest of over 37,000 hectares, white sandy beaches, coral gardens offshore, varieties of wildlife species, so it is not hard Long Beach, Phu Quoc to see why the island has great tourist potential.

The government has formed a master plan to develop the island into a high quality eco-tourism destination by 2020. As investment starts to flow into Vietnam, the Island will slowly undergoing development and improved infrastructure.

The Prime Minister has offered the best preferences possible for domestic and foreign investors to allow development of the Island, leading to an international standard tourist and trade centre by 2020.

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc island lies just 12 km south of the Cambodian coast, west of Kampot, and 40 km west of Ha Tien, the nearest coastal town in Vietnam. Roughly triangular in shape the island is 50 kilometres (31 mi) long from north to south and 25 kilometres (16 mi) from east to west in the north at its widest. It is also located 62 nautical miles (115 km; 71 mi) from Rach Gia and nearly 290 nautical miles (540 km; 330 mi) from Laem Chabang, Thailand.

A mountainous ridge known as “99 Peaks” runs the length of Phu Quoc, with Chua Mountain being the tallest at 603 metres (1,978 ft).

The island’s monsoonal sub-equatorial climate is characterized by distinct rainy (June to November) and dry seasons (December to May). The annual rainfall is high, averaging 2,879 millimetres (9.446 ft). In the northern mountains up to 4,000 millimetres (13 ft) has been recorded. April and May are the hottest months, with temperature reaching 35 °C (95 °F).

ECONOMY

Tourism plays an important part of the economy with the beaches being the main attraction. Phu Quoc is served by Phu Quoc Itenation Airport with air links to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)’s Tan Son Nhat Airport and Rach Gia‘s Rach Gia Airport. Plans are in progress for a new international airport for the island. Phu Quoc is also linked with Rach Gia and Ha Tiên by fast ferry hydrofoils.Phu Quoc is famous for its two traditional products: fish sauce and black pepper. The rich fishing grounds offshore provides the anchovy catch from which the prized sauce is made. Pepper cultivation is located inland in the center of the island. More recently a pearl farm was established.

The beach in the island is very quiet compared to other beach we have been. Here, you will find a beautiful sandy beach, water activities are available if you are interested such as water ski, canoe etc. but even though this place is not very touristy expected to pay more for water activity
